Full House (of Germs): How to Handle a Family Sick Day

Shot of a family blowing their noses while sick in bed at home.

We’ve all been there — your child falls ill, your spouse or partner mentions a tickle in their throat, and come to think of it, you’re feeling achy. The next day, it’s unanimous — no one can go to school or work.

When you’re feeling lousy yourself, it’s even more difficult to take care of your household. Here are some helpful ways to get through this tough time.

Colds and Quarantines

If you’re the primary caregiver, you may be the one in closest proximity to sick family members. When you’re sick too, you don’t want to aggravate others’ symptoms and make matters worse. Ensure that family members stay in separate quarters if possible, such as their own bedrooms, and wear a mask and/or gloves when necessary (speaking to someone and/or handling medications or food).

Take Care of You

As a caregiver, you’ll need to handle your symptoms in order to best take care of others. Ensure that you are taking rest breaks when the others are napping to keep your energy levels up. Also, increase your fluid intake to stay hydrated and help your body fight off the germs. Additionally, when contacting family members’ doctors, make sure to call your own and schedule an appointment or request recommendations based on your needs. It will help all of you improve much faster.

Take Turns

If possible, coordinate rest time and kid care with your spouse or partner. This will give you the chance to not only address your symptoms but also get much-needed sleep. Taking the time to listen to your body will serve you well in the long run.
