Clear Your Cough the Right Way with These Dos and Don’ts

As the air cools and the leaves change, coughs from seasonal allergies or colds can strike at any time. When a cough hits, our first instinct is to silence it, but that’s not the best idea. A cough is your body’s way of clearing your airways and suppressing it can do more harm than good. Instead of shutting it down, here’s a smarter approach with a few dos and don’ts to ensure you’re supporting your body’s natural defenses.

Do:
  • Drink Lots of Water. Staying hydrated can help to thin out mucus, making it easier to expel. As you get rid of the mucus in your airways, it will soothe your cough.
  • Try Honey. Honey has been used for thousands of years, prized for its sweet taste and medicinal qualities. It has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, and the thick, syrupy texture makes it ideal for calming coughs and soothing throats. You can find Acacia honey in Boiron’s Chestal Honey Cough Syrup for adults and children.
  • Avoid Triggers. Whether it is cold air, fall pollen, or a stubborn bug, steer clear of anything that can worsen your cough. Keep the windows closed during allergy season and sip warm tea if a chill or a cold is bothering you.
Don’t:
  • Drink caffeine. We know it’s tempting when you’re not feeling well to grab the pick-me-up in the morning, but intaking caffeine tends to dehydrate you. Being dehydrated makes your mucus thicker and your coughs less productive. Carbonated drinks can also irritate a throat that is sore from coughing.
  • Let the Air Get Too Dry. Using humidifiers will increase the moisture in the air and stave off dry throats and dry coughs. You can also try sitting in a steamy bathroom to keep your throat moist.
  • Overdo it. While your body is trying its best to expel mucus and address the cause of your cough, you should help it out by taking the time to rest. Let your body focus on keeping you healthy rather than your daily schedule.

A cough can put a damper on your plans but soothe your cough and avoid aggravating it by following these dos and don’ts.
