Handy Tips to Relieve Digital Eye Strain

If you are one of the tens of millions of Americans who spend hours in front of a computer screen every day, youโ€™re at risk of developing digital eye strain, which can lead to headaches, blurred vision, and dry eyes. But there are many ways to reduce the effects of prolonged exposure to digital screens.

Most over-the-counter eye drops contain preservatives, which can cause inflammation, said Dr. Daniel Isaac, an optometrist who has practiced for more than 30 years in Cherry Hill, N.J. And with homeopathic medicines, thereโ€™s no risk of contamination between eyes.

Homeopathic medicines that can offer relief for eye ailments include:

Dr. Isaac is a proponent of the American Optometric Associationโ€™s โ€œ20-20-20 ruleโ€ as another method to alleviate digital eye strain. โ€œYou should take a 20-second break to view something 20 feet away every 20 minutes,โ€ he said, adding that itโ€™s also good to get up out of your chair and move around as well.

Another weapon in the fight against digital eye strain are eyeglass lenses that absorb blue light, the type of light associated with digital eye strain. Blue light, which is part of the visible light spectrum, reaches deeper into the eye and its cumulative effect can cause damage. Dr. Isaac said overexposure to blue light has been linked to the development of cataracts and macular degeneration, which can lead to permanent vision loss. โ€œIt also interferes with your brainโ€™s production of melatonin, which leads to sleep issues.โ€

Some electronic devices have settings that can be adjusted to screen out blue light, Dr. Isaac said. Apple and Android devices automatically adjust the colors of your display to the warmer end of the spectrumโ€”making the display easier on your eyes.

    1. Hi Diane,

Unfortunately, Boiron USA has decided to discontinue sales of Optique 1 in the United States. This is due to FDA’s heightened scrutiny of eye care products after contaminated drops produced in India led to multiple serious adverse events.

Optique 1 has not been recalled and there is no expected health risk with the use of these eye drops. This applies to all segments of the population, including children, elderly persons, and people with compromised immune systems or pre-existing conditions. Neither Boiron nor FDA cited safety issues or concerns with the product’s quality.

Boiron has no plans to reformulate, repackage/rename, or in general relaunch Optique 1 or offer another eye drop product in the U.S.

      Thanks!

  1. This is horrible news. These are the best eyedrops I have ever used. I have been looking everywhere for them, and finally decided to come to your site. There is no other eyedrop on the market and I know because Iโ€™ve used them all that can compare to yours. I sure hope you rethink this and bring them back..

  2. PLEASE rethink this discontinuance of eye drops. We have no other decent choice here in the states for eye drops that actually have ingredients that HEAL not just treat symptoms. Optique has been essential in the healing of my severe dry eye. Other drops contain allergens and made my eyelashes fall out!

PLEASE Be brave and produce a product that the FDA can approve!

    1. Hi Kathie,

Thank you so much for your feedback! We have sent it to our team.

In the meantime, while we understand that they cannot replace the sensation of an eyedrop, we recommend trying our single medicines to find relief from your symptoms. For dry eyes, medicines such as Calendula officinalis, which in a low dilution relieves eye dryness associated with smoke or other airborne irritants, or Alumina 6C, which is indicated for a tendency to dry eyes, can help.

      Thanks!

  3. Agreed. These are amazing drops; I really wish we could get them. A friend has used them for over 10 years, and also wishes they were still available. Please reconsider, would be great to have Optique1 back on the shelves . . . .

    1. Hi Mary Ann,

Thank you for your feedback, we have sent it to our team.

Cineraria maritima – Soothes red and irritated eyes
Euphrasia officinalis – Relieves burning, irritated eyes
Kali muriaticum – Alleviates gritty sensation (feeling of sand in the eye)
Magnesia carbonica – Relieves sharp and brief eye irritation associated with eye fatigue
      Silicea – Relives tired eyes

      Thanks!

      1. Thank you for providing info on single options for eye issues. I want to add to the growing feedback that we really NEED these drops back in the US. I personally started using them on horses with UVEITIS which is an inflammatory condition of the eye, and they have been amazing and were pivotal in managing the uveitis in a blind horse. It is so uncomfortable for them when their eyes are hot, leaking and inflamed. It really helped me get the inflammation under control. I am using the last batch I have for another horse currently and she literally seems to breathe relief when I get the liquid into her eye. I really hope you can over come whatever hurdle is necessary to bring them back. Nothing compares and Optique 1 has been a godsend.

  4. To ditto the above comments ~ would love to have your Optique 1 eye drops again! They are excellent at relieving allergy and dry eye symptoms. Even an employee at New Seasons (where I used to purchase), said they were special, and as far as she knows there is no replacement in any other brand.

Thank you so much in the meantime, for providing specific alternative remedies. Will give them a try.

    1. Hi Lani,

Thank you so much for your feedback – we have let our team know. We hope that the alternatives we provided help!

      Thanks!

  5. Ditto to all the comments above, the Optique 1 eye drops are the best! They relieve all of my allergy eye and nose symptoms better than anything I have ever found. Please reconsider discontinuing this product. Thank you!

  6. Patricia Sampson

Yes! I Agree! Your Optique 1 Eye Drops were absolutely the best eye drops on the market.
There is no other brand of eye drops, homeopathic or conventional, that could/can compare.
    Please reconsider.
And thank you for continuing to the rest of your products available.
    Kind Regards,
    Patricia

  7. I agree with everyone else. These are the best eye drops. I had no idea that they were being discontinued. My family has been using them for years. What am I going to use now?
