Bringing home your bundle of joy has changed your life in so many ways. And while you were prepared for some sleepless nights, the deprivation you’ve experienced may be far more challenging than you ever expected. Getting quality sleep may be difficult during the newborn days, but it’s not impossible. A few simple strategies can help you stay sane and better rested during this demanding time.
Nap together. Newborns take frequent naps, so it’s the perfect opportunity for mom and dad to relax, too. While it’s tempting to catch up on chores when your baby is asleep, resist the urge as rest is more important right now.
Trade off baby duty. You and your partner don’t need to be on feeding duty all night. Instead, alternate schedules by splitting up the night between a bedtime routine (e.g., 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.) and an early morning routine (e.g., 1 to 6 a.m.). This ensures you’ll both get a few solid hours of uninterrupted sleep every night.
Get help. Don’t be shy about asking for help from trusted friends or relatives, especially if they’re stopping by to visit the baby. Accept any assistance, whether it’s for baby duties or chores like grocery shopping.
Know that this is temporary. Infants aren’t born with a sense of day and night in their internal clocks. But the good news is that by 6 months of age, most babies will sleep soundly through the night, and soon so will you.
