Did you know that yesterday was National Ice Cream Day? Don’t worry if you forgot—July is National Ice Cream Month, so you have 16 more days to celebrate! But before you dig into that yummy dish of vanilla or chocolate ice cream, here are some fun facts from the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) about one of our nation’s most popular desserts:

– In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by 90 percent of the nation’s population.

– About nine percent of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream.

– About 1.53 billion gallons of ice cream and related frozen desserts were produced in the U.S. in 2011.

– The majority of U.S. ice cream and frozen dessert manufacturers have been in business for more than 50 years, and many are still family-owned businesses.

– America’s top five favorite individual flavors are vanilla, chocolate, cookie ‘n cream, strawberry and chocolate chip mint.

And just in case you eat one too many ice cream sandwiches over the next two weeks while celebrating this happy holiday, try Nux vomica pellets. One of the most popular single homeopathic medicines, Nux helps to relieve nausea and an upset stomach from overindulgence in food (including ice cream!) and drink.* Click here for more information on this medicine and to find out where to buy it, and enjoy your ice cream, whatever flavor you choose!

*Claims based on traditional homeopathic practice, not accepted medical evidence. Not FDA evaluated.
