All About Apis Mellifica—The Stinging Homeopathic Medicine

|

In this guest blog, American homeopath, educator of families on how to use homeopathy, and mom Joette Calabrese, HMC, CCH, RSHom(Na) shares her tips on how to use one of the most popular homeopathic single medicines, Apis mellifica. For more tips, tricks and secrets on getting and staying healthy, as well as articles, upcoming seminars and events on homeopathy, visit www.JoetteCalabrese.com.

Imagine having a non-drowsy medicine that will relieve the pain, swelling and even danger caused by a bee sting. What if a medicine could do all that and cost less than $20? Does it seem too good to be true? Welcome to the world of homeopathy—a world of infinite capabilities to heal, soothe and comfort the ailments of bee stings and the like.

Apis mellifica, otherwise known as Apis, is made from a honeybee. In an FDA-regulated homeopathic pharmacy, a honeybee is crushed, added to alcohol, and then diluted so many times the offending aspect of the bee venom is removed, leaving only the curative agent. After this procedure, it becomes a powerful medicine for an actual honeybee sting and for ailments that have similar symptoms.

Swelling, watery-filled localized areas of redness and inflammation are the hallmark of Apis. The affected area has a puffy appearance and sometimes looks like bags of water under the skin. This is not unlike the edema produced by allergic reactions. More often than not, it occurs under the eyes and is sometimes accompanied by hives. When an eye is nearly shut with swelling, Apis is probably the correct medicine. Hence, the most common conditions Apis will relieve are eye infections such as conjunctivitis and styes, sore throats, hives, stings from insects, and urinary tract infections.

Let me offer an example. My aunt, who had been prone to styes in her twenties, was suddenly revisited in her 70s by this painful and cumbersome malady. Her doctor gave her an antibiotic that brought down the swelling and pain in short order. This was the method used for the first, second and third ones, but by the fourth outbreak, only months later, she called me. As usual, her eye was quite swollen and red, but she reported that each outbreak was becoming increasingly more painful. She described the pain as stinging and that was all that was needed for me to choose Apis30C. She took this honey of a remedy and reported a few days later the intensity of the pain diminished enough to allow her to read by the following morning. Two days later, there was still some puffiness and sensitivity, but the worst was past. This occurred over a decade ago, and there has been no return of her problem.

When pain is eased by cold applications to the troubled area and when warmth causes increased distress, it’s also most likely a call for Apis. When a sore throat is the problem, other good clues are a desire for a cold drink and aversion to or pain from a warm drink. The Apis sufferer cannot tolerate warmth from the sun or a warm room. When you observe a swollen uvula or tonsils, Apis should be considered. Despite the water-filled appearance of Apis, the sufferer is not thirsty. This contradiction is useful when a differential between two homeopathic remedies is perplexing. Sensitive skin where hives have erupted also indicates the need for Apis. The physical symptoms are sometimes accompanied byweepy sadness and irritability. A fright, “stinging” jealousy, anger or disappointment often cause a need for Apis on both a physical and emotional level.

So the next time you experience a stinging swelling with heat on the skin, in the throat, in the urinary tract or in the eye, think homeopathy and think Apis, the honeybee. You may find yourself buzzing with enthusiasm.

Anasays:

Hello thank you for your nice post. My husband was recommended by one homeopath to use Apis Mellifica among other homeopathic remedies for sinusitis, some kind of allergy in this sinuses area.. Would you normally recomend it for sinusitis? Thank you. Ana

Boironsays:

As a company, we indicate Apis mellifica for swelling from insect bites or allergies.

Janicesays:

My homeopath recommended Apis for symptoms that included a sinus infection, swollen feet and hands, sensitivity to the sun and menses-localized depression. If you consult a homeopath they take into consideration the whole picture, not just one symptom, so if your sinus problems and other symptoms indicate an overall Apis type, they might prescribe it, or there might be another remedy that works better for you depending on the other symptoms you are experiencing. A reliable homeopath is always better than relying on just the label on the bottle.

where from I could get apis mellifica in j&k

Boironsays:

A CK is the same as a K dilution. CK dilutions are available on Amazon. I consulted with our pharmacist and he is not familiar with a j dilution, perhaps this is a nickname for a dilution found in another country.

Medication for ankle swelling after a sprane

Boironsays:

Hello Eileen, we recommend Arnicare FootCare or Arnicare Cream to help reduce pain and swelling following strains or sprains. You can rub it on three times a day or as needed.

Boironsays:

Hi Eileen, you can purchase Apis mellifica here on our website, online at Amazon, or at your local health food store including Whole Foods Market.

Taliasays:

is apis to be ingested or rubbed on hives or blisters?

Boironsays:

Apis should be dissolved under the tongue and not rubbed on the irritation.

Sandy Steubingsays:

I have a severe reaction with hives all over my body! I took Aphis Miel after a Benadryl and passed out when I got up! Hives are terrible! Would Aphis Miel, without Benadryl, world for my hives?

Boironsays:

Hi Sandy, there are no known interactions with homeopathic medicines and conventional medications like Benadryl, so they can be taken together without interference. If you’re having a severe allergic reaction, we urge you to seek immediate medical assistance.

Hello,
I have developed a contact allergy to polyester/plastic. Will this medicine help me to not have swelling, itching, hives when I come into contact with this material if I take it regularly?

Boironsays:

Our medicines can not be used as a preventative. When you do come in contact with this material, Urtica urens 30C or Sulphur 30C can offer relief.

We recommend Apis mellifica 6C and Ledum palustre 6C for insect bites. Take 5 pellets of each 3 times a day until symptoms are relieved.

noramansays:

Hi, Boiron, are there homeopathic lotions-or-creams to treat allergy red dots and/or skin hives? Please reply.

Boironsays:

Thank you for your question. While we do not have topicals that address this specific question, some of our single medicines (oral pellets) can address some of these issues. For example, Histaminum relieves symptoms of allergies, such as hay fever, hives or urticaria. Refer to our Boiron Medicine Finder on https://www.boironusa.com for more information.

Mindysays:

What’s the difference between 6C and 30c on the apis?

Boironsays:

Thank you for your question, Mindy. Most single homeopathic medicines like Apis are available in different dilutions. The letter indicates which dilution process was chosen, while the number indicates how many times that dilution process was used, and consequently, which symptoms the medicine is meant to treat. Low dilutions, such as 6C, will relieve local symptoms— symptom you can point a finger at (i.e., an insect bite or bruise). High dilutions, such as 30C, will relieve general symptoms—more than one symptom in more than one location with possible behavioral or emotional symptoms (i.e., a very high fever and chills, accompanied by agitation or sleeplessness). If a person has the right medicine, no matter what the dilution, he or she will see a lessening of symptoms. For most medicines, choosing the right dilution is merely fine tuning. It may be helpful for you to use our Boiron Medicine Finder at http://www.BoironUSA.com to decide which dilution is best.

Landiesays:

Hi Boiron,
My son who is 11 has had swollen tonsils for quite some time now, which cause him to snore. What do you recommend?

Boironsays:

Thank you for your question, Landie. Our pharmacist recommends that five pellets of Apis mellifica be taken before bedtime if drinking cold liquids improves his condition. If cold does not improve it, then five pellets of Belladonna 6C is recommended before bedtime. He also recommends that your son sleep on his side or belly for better comfort.

Ronnisays:

My 11 year old had swimmers ear, which turned into a middle ear infection. The doctor prescribed amoxicillin. On the last day of treatment ( the tenth day), my son developed horrible hives from head to toe. A few hours later, his body swelled. He developed pain and cannot walk a lot of the time. His hives are now gone, but the pain has lasted a week so far. The pain travels. Sometimes it’s in his right leg, the next day it’s in his left leg. A few hours later, it could be his arms, then his jaw, then his feet, and a day later, back to his legs. The past two nights, he had a high fever. The worst of it is at night. Sometimes he can’t even walk. The doctor doesn’t seem to care, because they can’t see his pain and it’s not bothering them.

What can I give him to help his pain? It might be getting better on its own, but it’s happening very slowly.

Also, if he ever comes into contact with another allergen, he may need an epi pen. Is there an alternative to that as well?

I really hope you can help me, because nobody else will.

Thank you.

BOIRON USAsays:

Hello Ronni,

Thank you for contacting the Boiron Information Center.

As a manufacturer, we offer over-the-counter medicines with clear indications for acute conditions that can be safely relieved with self-medication. Each medicine is labeled with the most common acute condition it relieves. However, health care professionals may instruct their patients to use the medicine for other conditions not listed on the label.

Homeopathic treatments for chronic conditions are very specific to each patient. There may be a homeopathic treatment that addresses your condition, but we recommend consulting a practitioner knowledgeable in homeopathy. If you do not have a practitioner, please contact the National Center for Homeopathy at 703-506-7667or visit http://www.nationalcenterforhomeopathy.org.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions. Thank you.

Gloriasays:

Hi there! I recently have been getting bit by mosquitos and while i know im allergic the bite areas have turned into big red extremely itchy bumps. Will the apis help with this?

BOIRON USAsays:

Apis mellifica 30C will work fine: take 5 pellets every 20 minutes and decrease with improvement. Take Histaminum 30C as well (5 pellets three times a day) to decrease the allergic reaction.

If you know there are mosquitoes around, you can take 5 pellets of ledum palustre 6C every hour or so: it doesn’t prevent the bites, but decreases the reaction. Use a repellant as well: there are very good organic ones.

Hello, there are a variety of medicines that can help with leg pain, but their usage depends on the specific symptoms you have.

Karensays:

HI I’m curious, if someone is allergic to bees or bee stings would it be dangerous for them to take Apis? Thanks you
Karen

BOIRON USAsays:

Apis mellifica 6C and above is far too diluted to cause any harm, even in an allergic person. Use a 30C dilution, which tends to work faster. Apis works fast but doesn’t last long: take it frequently at first (every 15-20 minutes) and decrease the frequency with improvement.

I have had urticaria for 14 days totally covered. My friend recommended apis 30c how much can I take?

Boironsays:

Dear Natasha,
Thank you for your question. Our pharmacist recommends that you take Apis mellifica 30C frequently (every hour or even 30 minutes) because the medicine works fast, but does not last. You may also take Histaminum 30C and Urtica urens 6C. Please refer to the Boiron Homeopathic Medicine Finder for details:

Hamidsays:

Hi
I have Hashimoto auto immune disease and urticaria erupts on me every now and then. I am on anti histamines from long. Sometimes I need to take a steroid shot to control urticaria. This steroid thing happens two or three times a year. The urticaria mainly comes on my forehead head hands and feet only no where else. A friend of mine recommended Apis Millfica 30C. You think this will help eradicate this allergy for good? If I take this medicine shall I dis continue the ones I am taking? Mainly the antihistamines?

Also pls advise if this antihistamines affects your sexual life? If yes what alternative homeopathic Medicine has for it?

Thanks

Boironsays:

Thank you for your question. The Boiron Homeopathic Medicine Finder (available on our website or download it for free from the app store) offers protocols to relieve symptoms, but does not affect the auto-immune disease itself. We recommend trying the protocol found in the medicine finder (Histaminum 30C, Apis mellifica 30C, and Urtica urens 6C) for hives without discontinuing the use of antihistamines. If you experience relief of your symptoms, then try taking the homeopathic medicines without the antihistamines and evaluate the results. The goal is not to eradicate Hashimoto, but to decrease the need for antihistamines and steroid shots. Please contact the Boiron Information Center at 1-800-BOIRON1 or info@boiron.com if you have further questions.

S Msays:

Hi,

My menstrual period got shorten after taking too much estrogen, and I’m suffering from estrogen dominance since then. My periods became irregular and short. I used to have 28 days cycles; now 23-26. My menses are reddish black and black clothings. I’m suffering PMS (tender breast, back pain, bloating). I’m very fatigue and have no desire to do anything. I became very lazy and sluggish, and any effort makes me exhausted. I have pain during intercourse. I grind my teeth a lot, and I get angry easily. I gained a lot of weight and can’t lose weight even after exercising (My weight used to be around 102-108 lb, and now it is 167 lb increase of more than 60% of my original weight). My homeopathic doctor prescribed for me Sepia; I took it for 3 months; it relieved my PMS, but while traveling I didn’t get period for almost 2 months; after that I got period for one month (bleeding for 4-5 days stopping for 2-3 days, and bleeding again all red blood; this continued for a month. Doctor stopped Sepia and prescribed Apis for me. I have been taking it for 2 months now; it relieved my PMS a little bit but my periods are still irregular and short (last one was 23 days) lots of black clots and last for 2-3 days only with reddish black blood. I got in a deep depression after taking Sepia and Apis.

Also after a car accident in 2008 I took 2 medications that the side effects are weight gain and water retention especially in my legs (with no physical problems). Doctors couldn’t figure out what is the reason of my edema/water retention. Since then I had to diet and exercise to lose weight; but after estrogen dominance I’m unable to lose weight.

What do you recommend for me to extend my cycles back to 28 days, get red blood (instead of black blood and clots), lose weight, lower my estrogen levels, increase progesterone levels (balance my hormones), and relief my PMS.

Thanks & Best Regards.

Boironsays:

Thank you for contacting us. As a manufacturer, we cannot make self-medication recommendations based on the nature of your symptoms which require the consultation and advice of a healthcare professional per our pharmacist.

Jimmy hansensays:

Hi. I am taking lithium carbonate and i developed itching. Allegra and Apis are being used to control my discomfort. Any thoughts on this? Please

Boironsays:

Hello Jimmy, we spoke with our pharmacist and he suggests you check with doctor or health care professional as itching is not a common side effect of lithium carbonate. Meanwhile, he recommends 5 pellets of Apis 30C every hour or more frequently if itching is intense, in addition to Urtica urens 6C three times a day or as needed. Please be aware that Allegra may help with itching but can cause drowsiness, so consider trying homeopathy first and keeping antihistamines as a second option.

Please feel free to contact our Boiron Information Center at 1-800-BOIRON 1 or e-mail info@boiron.com if you have any more questions about these medicines or dosing.

VK Singhsays:

Can apis mellifica 30 be used to treat epididymal cyst? Please tell me how effective is this medicine for epididymal cyst?

Any recommendation for this disease?

Boironsays:

Hello VK, according to our pharmacist, Apis mellifica is used to relieve acute inflammation of mucous membranes with swelling and stinging, burning pain improved by cold applications. If these symptoms are present, Apis might be indicated. However, Apis is not used to drain cysts or reduce them. Meanwhile, Colocynthis 6C can be used for dull pain causing nausea. We recommend you consult with a health care professional about specific treatment options for your condition.

Boironsays:

Hi Jaspal, sorry to hear about your skin reaction. Yes, Apis mellifica 30C can help relieve pink, swollen skin with itching that is improved by cold compresses. However, there are a few other homeopathic medicines for skin issues that might help. We recommend you use the free Boiron Medicine Finder app to help select which one is right for you. Just go into into the “First Aid – Skin” section and look from there. If your condition lasts for more than 3 days or worsens, we recommend you speak to a physician.

Hello,
I have problem with right eye mild to severe twitches and feels swollen and full just above inner canthus in corner
Started 3 years ago after sinus infection. Worse with light. I have an ointment which contain apis
Would this be the right medicine to use. Thank You

Boironsays:

Hello Jay, Apis may help, but first you should read the label on the ointment to find out if it’s suitable for use around your eyes. Be careful when applying to avoid getting any in your eye. For a more convenient treatment, we recommend using Apis orally in pellet form. Simply place the pellets in your mouth and melt under your tongue. Here’s the link to Apis pellets in our shop: https://shop.boironusa.com/medicine/apis-mellifica/

Kristensays:

What is the difference between Apis 30c and Apis 30ch? Thank you!

Boironsays:

Hello Kristen, great question. There is no difference between Apis 30C and Apis 30CH. Both “C” and “CH” stand for Centesimal Hahnemannian scale, which is a scale of dilution where each dilution is a 1/100 dilution of the previous one. “CH” is just an alternative abbreviation used outside of the U.S. Hope that helps!

Josie Chavezsays:

I recently was told that I could put apis mellifica in water and then directly put on bug bites. How many pellets and how much water would you recommend? When bugs bite my son, his skin swells and the affected area is quite itchy.

Boironsays:

Hello Josie, your question had me stumped! I consulted with our resident pharmacist and he says that the medicine is not easily absorbed by the skin when diluted with water, plus it would dry too fast before the medicine could really soak in. He recommends using Apis pellets orally as they are quickly absorbed in the mouth and will provide the best results.

If you want something soothing for your son’s skin, you may want to try Calendula Gel. It’s great for bug bites and has a refreshing, cool feeling. It’s safe to use this alongside Apis pellets, too. Here’s the link in our shop: https://shop.boironusa.com/medicine/calendula-gel/

LYDIA JENKSsays:

Hello, I am confused.. is Apis Mellifica made from dead crushed honeybees?

Boironsays:

Hi Lydia, yes, Apis mellifica is made from a tincture of honeybees in accordance with the United States Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia and FDA regulations. Homeopathic medicines have active ingredients that originate from animals, plants, or minerals.

Kumar Sunilkumar Pawarsays:

So, if a malaria mosquito bites then we should crush another malaria mosquito, dilute it and eat it?

Boironsays:

Hello Kumar, unfortunately it is not that simple. Homeopathic medicines are obtained from a precise and controlled process of successive homeopathic dilutions, from specific substances provided in the homeopathic pharmacocpoeia. With each dilution, the medicine is deconcentrated and then vigorously shaken (also called “succussion”) with specialized equipment. This process transforms the original solution into a therapeutically active medicine. We do not recommend making your own.

Anne Walterssays:

How much apis and how often should I take for a stye that is just starting?

Boironsays:

Hello Anne, the standard dosage is to take five (5) pellets three (3) times a day.

Judithsays:

I have had a few bee stings in the last few years. Also, numerous mosquito bites all summer long that I become allergic to and suffer a great deal from. On Sunday had last bee sting where my foot “blew up” again on the second day. Very painful and no homeopathy i was taking was helping. I now realize they were not the correct homeopathy. A naturopath recommended April Mellifica and i felt improvement in the second dose. Today (2 days later) i still have a little swelling but the pain and other symptoms have improved greatly. It’s almost like a miracle.

Priya Laksays:

Can this be taken for chronic spontaneous urticaria? In pregnancy? I have developed puppp rashes and angioedema also .. swelling on lips

Faithsays:

I have cold urticaria, and I take it for mine. I get hives, swelling, itching, and even pains in severe cases. I have taken it for a while now and it helps a lot, although I have not tried it whilst being pregnant.

Boironsays:

Linsays:

Can Apis effective in cases of general edema such as anasarca?
If edema has a hormonal cause versus being caused by histamine response, might Apis be indicated?
Thank you for the information.

Boironsays:

Hello Lin, homeopathic medicines are chosen based on observation of symptoms. Apis is indicated for swelling that improves with cold applications, regardless of whether it’s from hormonal or allergic origin. There are several other homeopathic medicines that can relieve anasarca, but their selection is based on accompanying symptoms like the area of the body that is most affected, or the color of the skin, etc. A practitioner skilled in homeopathy will be able to help identify which medicine is right for you. Find one in your area by contacting the National Center for Homeopathy at (856) 437- 4752 or visit http://www.homeopathycenter.org.

Tinasays:

Would is the best remedy for white stuff in hair . Not sure if it is dandruff but similar and flaky and itchy . It goes away after piling and washing with regular shampoo but then comes back . There is also some hair loss . Don’t want to used any strong stuff in hair .Thx

Boironsays:

Hi Tina, first try switching to a softer shampoo and reducing how often you wash your hair. If the dandruff flakes are large, your scalp is oozing, or itching is intense, you should see a physician to rule out any skin infections or other skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Please contact the National Center for Homeopathy at (856) 437- 4752 or visit http://www.homeopathycenter.org to find a homeopathic physician in your area.

Anjusays:

Hello,
I moved from one state to the other in fall around 2 years ago. Developed red, very itchy areas in the lower back and belly region, unrelieved by steroid ointments. The affected areas last from fall to beginning of summer, remove but leave behind dark and spotty skin. Have even tried to isolate most fresh fruits and raw vegetables. Never had this problem before, am frustrated as it is becoming recurrent. A friend mentioned Homeopathy….so here I am. What would you recommend ?

Boironsays:

Hello Anju, there are a variety of homeopathic medicines for skin conditions and food allergies. However, since you’re not sure what the problem is, it’s best to seek treatment from a homeopathic practitioner. You can contact the National Center for Homeopathy at (856) 437- 4752 or visit http://www.homeopathycenter.org to find one in your area.

What are the medicines for epididymal cyst. And how sure are you that it will cure my problem?

Boironsays:

Thanks for your question, Rahul. Apis mellifica is used to relieve acute inflammation of mucous membranes with swelling and stinging, burning pain improved by cold applications. If these symptoms are present with your epididymal cyst, Apis will offer relief. To help drain a cyst, low dilutions of Hepar sulph are often used. You will want to consult with a health care professional about dosage and frequency, or other treatment options for your condition.

Rihamsays:

Due to excessive use of antibiotics and antifungals I took a prebiotics. But afterwards my eyes got inflammed. I experienced itchy skin, sore throat and painful joints. I have a history of dry eye syndrome and usually use the Arsenicum C 200 to relief symptoms. This time the C 200 agrevated the condition. My eyes got more inflammed, with stinging, redness, and itchiness near the tear ducts, also feeling of panic, fear, weepiness and crying were hightened. There’s bags and darkness under the eyes associated with the stinging, redness and dryness. Cool air makes it better. Facial scrub containing peppermint and tea tree oils produce a cooling effect that also helps. I can tolerate warm herbal drinks. I suffer from so many things because of a depo-provera shot (projesterone injection for contraception) it messed up with my thyroid hormones and blood sugar, but the stinging eyes only happened after the prebiotics which I tried for the first time and aggrevated by c200 . I also have vulvodyna where vulva is inflammed and painful to touch. My homeopathic specialist suggested I use Apis. Is it the remedy for me?

Boironsays:

Thank you for your question, Riham. Please follow the recommendations of your homeopathic specialist for treatment. They know your condition and symptoms best. We hope you find relief and feel better soon.
