How to Water Your Garden Like A Pro
By keeping your garden properly hydrated, you will be rewarded with a lush, colorful landscape!
Here are some simple tips to make sure your garden gets an adequate supply of water so it can thrive all growing season long:
Water Newbies Often: New plants or fast-growing ones need lots of water to put down strong roots. Be sure to water frequently so they won’t wilt or dry up.
Timing is Everything: Water your garden either early in the morning or later in the evening. When it’s cooler out, there is less water evaporation and your plants will get maximum hydration benefits. Cool temps also help prevent the development of powdery mildew and other fungal-type diseases that thrive on high humidity.
Water Deeply: When you water, be sure it’s done thoroughly so it can penetrate deep into the soil.
Weed and Mulch: Weeds take up a lot of water away from your desirable plants, so be sure to remove them. Mulch will also keep the soil moist when the sun is at its hottest.
And remember to save and reuse water wherever you can. Collecting rain in barrels is a great example of using natural resources in a sustainable way. Learn how to water your garden like a pro and other essential tips by watching our Healthy Garden Series featuring our friends at Rodale Institute.
